Wayne Ngan: Vessels

We are honored to present for the first time in Switzerland vessels by the Chinese-Canadian artist Wayne Ngan. Over fifteen works spanning from 2002 to 2015 will be visible at our first collaboration with the artist.
Wayne Ngan draws inspiration from Asian cultures, especially Korean and Japanese, and follows the teachings of Japanese pottery master Yoichi Murakami. Ngan travelled with Murakami throughout Japan, visiting and studying techniques at several pottery centers. His European influences draw from German artist Hans Coper and Austrian artist Lucie Rie. Ngan continues to develop through self-teaching and reflection garnering him the ability and techniques to be a master of the art form. Each of the artist's vessels is the result of many years of work and research, leading to timeless objects of rare finesse.
Born 1937 in Canton, China, Wayne Ngan currently lives and works in Hornby Island, Canada. Ngan has exhibited extensible, primarily in North America and Asian countries. Recent exhibitions include Nathalie Karg Gallery, New York and The Apartment in Vancouver, New York and Dallas. He has received numerous awards including the British Columbia Creative Achievement Award of Distinction in 2013 and the Saidye Bronfman Award for Masters of the Crafts in 1983.
Wayne Ngan: Vessels will be on view January 14th through March 11th, 2016. Marc Jancou Contemporary Geneva is located at rue des bains 63, 1205 Genève. Nous sommes honorés de présenter pour la première fois en Suisse les sculptures en grès émaillé de l'artiste sino-canadien Wayne Ngan. Une vingtaine d'œuvres datant pour la plupart des dix dernières années seront visibles pour notre première collaboration avec l’artiste.
L’artiste puise notamment ses inspirations dans la culture asiatique et plus particulièrement coréenne et japonaise suite à une formation avec le maître potier japonais Yoichi Murakami. Il voyagera avec lui au Japon afin de découvrir plusieurs ateliers des arts du feu. Ses influences lui viennent également d’Europe grâce à la découverte des travaux de Hans Coper et de Lucie Rie. Wayne Ngan se forme aussi par lui-même en étudiant des techniques ancestrales qu'il adapte à sa propre pratique. Ainsi, chaque sculpture en grès émaillé est le fruit de ces années de travail et de recherche, aboutissant à des objets intemporels, d’une rare finesse.
Né à Canton, en Chine, en 1937, Wayne Ngan vit et travaille au Canada depuis 1951. Constamment actif depuis le début de sa carrière, il expose surtout en Amérique du Nord et en Asie. En 2015, il expose à la Galerie Nathalie Karg à New York, à The Apartement à Vancouver, New York et Dallas. Il reçoit plusieurs prix tel que le British Columbia Creative Achievement Award of Distinction en 2013 ou encore le Saidye Bronfman Award for Masters of the Crafts en 1983. Il est également invité à donner de nombreuses conférences et workshops à l'étranger.
