Presented by Marc Jancou Contemporary
From the 5th of September to the 11th of October 2025, Marc Jancou Contemporary is delighted to present an exhibition of new paintings and a four-colour woodblock print by Chicago-based artist Mari Eastman, which is the artist’s first solo show with the gallery.
Interweaving personal memory with popular culture, Eastman draws on a broad range of references to create works that span an equally varied range of themes and categories, from landscape, still life and portraiture to everyday scenes and images of animals.
Rendered in her characteristic dreamlike painting style, formed by energetic, loose, drawing-like brushstrokes which imbue the works with a sense of familiarity and immediacy but also movement and intensity, Eastman’s more-often than-not vibrant and colourful paintings oscillate between the playful and the whimsical and underlying themes of memory and identity, while also hinting to the plethora of images that surrounds us.
Mari Eastman (1970, Berkeley, CA) received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL (1996) and her BFA from Smith College in Northampton, MA (1992). Solo exhibitions include shows at The Green Gallery in Milwaukee, WI (2023), the Goldfinch Gallery in Chicago, IL (2021), Bombon Projects in Barcelona, Spain (2020) and Grifter in New York City, NY (2020) among others. Group exhibitions include Speed to Roam at Tif Sigfrids Gallery in Athens, GA (2022), I’m Afraid to Own a Body at Poker Flats in Williamstown, MA (2021), Contemporary Paintings from the Collection at Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, MA (2019), With a Capital P: Selections by Six Painters at the Elmhurst Art Museum in Elmhurst, IL (2019), and American Genre: Contemporary Painting at the ICA Maine College of Art in Portland, ME (2017). Eastman’s works form part of the public collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, MA, and the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, Denmark.
