Press Release

Marc Jancou is pleased to announce Zapałki, an exhibition of works by Stuttgart-based artist Dorota Jurczak, on view October 29 to December 6, 2014.

Polish-born Jurczak’s macabre and fantastical works are influenced by folklore and mythology, combined with inventions of her own imagination.  This exhibition will feature the full range of her practice: painting, etching, and sculpture.  In the bizarre, dream-like narrative of Jurczak’s work, distorted human figures, creeping woods, and anthropomorphic birds and spiders play our their individual drama in a vibrantly-colored, indistinct space.  Her cast of characters, predominantly indebted to Eastern European iconography, always appears content despite their darkly whimsical context.  Birds are a leitmotif in her work, and one has the sense that each piece is an illustration of allegory.  Jurczak’s highly stylized vignettes are like fragments of an ongoing surreal narrative that starts and stops without needing to make any sense.

Dorota Jurczak was born in 1978, in Warsaw, Poland and currently lives in Stuttgart, Germany.  Her work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions, including the 2006 Seville and Berlin Biennales.  Jurczak has also presented her work at the Tate Modern, London’ Van Abbemuseum, Eidhoven, Netherlands; Kunstraum Walcheturm, Zürich; CAPC Museé d’art Contemporain, Bordeaux, and MoMA PS1, New York.
